The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has created this privacy statement to demonstrate our firm commitment to protecting the privacy of visitors to our websites and describe the information-gathering and dissemination practices for our websites.

Personal Information

Some interactions on our website require certain personal information (such as name, email address and ZIP code) be submitted so that we can match site visitors to local action opportunities, process their contributions in compliance with applicable laws, and to respond and otherwise communicate with them. These interactions typically add the site visitor to our "eChampion" house file (email list) of persons interested in tobacco control issues or advocacy so that we can provide them with relevant information or offer additional action opportunities. Recipients always have the option to unsubscribe or opt-out of any such future communications.

We may share the provided personal information with companies we have contracted with to assist us with the operation of this website, but solely for website operation purposes. We will not sell or share our list. And we will not otherwise provide any personal contact information to any other organization or individual unless we are required by law or where we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order or legal process. We may sometimes use visitors' Internet Provider (IP) addresses to help diagnose problems with our server, and we use them, as necessary, to administer our websites.

At our online Action Center, we provide visitors with opportunities to submit statements to third parties, such as elected officials. By submitting such statements, visitors acknowledge that information such as name, email, and/or address (depending on which fields they fill in) will be sent to this third party along with their statement.

Demographic and profile data (such as zip code, age, or occupation) are also collected through our site. We use this information to guide our general efforts to supplement, revise, and otherwise improve the content of this website to better address visitor concerns and interests.

Cookies

We may use cookies (an electronic place- holder on visitors’ personal computers) to enable us to send registered visitors’ information and other content specific to their expressed interests, and to save a visitor’s personal password so s/he does not have to re-enter it each time the password-required sections of the website are visited. We offer visitors the choice to have us save their passwords, and visitors can accept or reject any cookies from our websites by taking advantage of the related settings and tools on their own computers.

This Privacy Statement applies only to information collected by this site. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these other websites. Because our site contain links to other sites, we encourage visitors to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of other sites..

Security

We strive to keep security measures in place to protect visitors against the loss, misuse, or alteration of any visitor information under our control. This includes the use of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for processing donations and financial information.

Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids' Commitment to Children's Privacy

The Campaign's mission is to help protect kids from tobacco, and we are equally committed to making children’s on-line experience with us as safe, constructive, and enjoyable as possible. We do NOT collect online contact information from children under the age of thirteen without taking steps to provide prior parental notification or obtain prior parental consent (in which we offer an opportunity for parents to prevent use of their children’s information or stop their participation in the activity). Unless we receive a communication providing prior parental consent, online information will be used only to respond directly to the child's request and not for other purposes.

More specifically, with regard to visitors under the age of thirteen our websites:

  • Do NOT collect personally identifiable offline contact information without prior parental notification;

  • Do NOT distribute to third parties any personally identifiable information without prior parental consent;

  • Do NOT give the ability to publicly post or otherwise distribute personally identifiable contact information without prior parental consent;

  • Do NOT entice by the prospect of a special game, prize or other activity, to divulge more information than is needed to participate in the activity;

  • Do ALLOW parents to review, change and/or delete their child's personal information given to the Campaign;

  • Do NOTIFY parents if we change the purpose for which we use a child's information (e.g. if we were to begin a chat room).

Unfortunately, given technological and resource limitations, it may be possible for some children under thirteen to evade our efforts to notify parents or obtain prior parental consent — especially if their parents do not supervise or monitor their Internet use at home.

To Opt-Out or Stop Receiving Communications

To help us to reach more people and expand our activities to prevent and reduce tobacco use and its harms, we may occasionally sell or exchange our eChampion mailing list with carefully screened organizations for a supervised one-time use. We will not otherwise provide any personal contact information to any other organization or individual, other than organizations working with us on public health or tobacco control efforts, without the visitor's express consent unless we are required by law or where we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order or legal process.
