Today is the Great American Smokeout

November 21, 2013

When you quit smoking, how long does it take for your health to improve?

No time at all. The health benefits of quitting smoking are almost immediate. As soon as you quit, you start to improve your health and increase your chances of leading a long, healthy life.

For many reasons, any day is a good day to quit smoking. But today is an especially good day. It’s the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout – a day when smokers are encouraged to quit smoking, or to make a plan to quit smoking.

Those who are successful in quitting smoking can look forward to health benefits today, next week and years down the road:

This year, in celebration of the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society has created a gallery of 'I QUIT' characters representing different types of quitters and supporters, including “The Substitute: Someone who replaces the urge to smoke with hard candy, healthy snacks, games, exercise, or other activities” and “The Dealmaker: Someone who bargains or barters with a smoker.”

For those trying to quit, help is available right now by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW or visiting www.smokefree.gov.
