If you're going on vacation, you've got more options than ever to get there smoke-free, and stay that way throughout your trip.
Three big cruise lines — Carnival, Princess and Holland America — have just announced that they're making all cabins smoke-free and tightening smoking restrictions in public spaces, beginning Dec. 1, 2011 for Carnival and Jan. 15, 2012 for Princess and Holland America. Princess will also ban smoking on cabin balconies, joining a growing number of cruise lines that do so.
Most cruise lines already have smoke-free policies in restaurants, theaters, corridors, elevators and other public areas.
'It's a different world now — basically a non-smoking world, to be sure,' Larry Pimentel, president and CEO of Azamara Club Cruises, told Frommer's. Azamara has one of the tightest smoke-free policies, prohibiting smoking in staterooms, on stateroom balconies and in all but two small public areas aboard each of their ships.
Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights has a great list of smoke-free travel resources. The growing list of smoke-free hotels, restaurants, nightspots and other venues shows that going smoke-free is good for health and good for business. The vast majority of hotel guests, for example, say they prefer smoke-free spaces. In fact, it's now possible to plan a smoke-free vacation itinerary, from airport to flight to rental car to hotel to restaurants, bars and beyond.
Getting away from it all gets better all the time.
