Graphic Warning Labels Update

June 21, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration has unveiled nine bold, graphic health warnings that will be required on cigarette packs and advertisements beginning in September, 2012.

Each warning includes a toll-free phone number, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, which will allow smokers to see it when they are lighting up — and direct them to the help they need to quit successfully.

“These labels are frank, honest and powerful depictions of the health risks of smoking and they will help encourage smokers to quit, and prevent children from smoking,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
