A Legacy of Impact
Barrie Fiske was a tireless tobacco control champion committed to using her strong voice to fight for change. Born with cystic fibrosis, Barrie faced a real threat to her health whenever exposed to secondhand smoke. Rejecting smoke-filled places, Barrie spoke up and advocated for everyone’s right to breathe clean, smoke-free air, joining Tobacco-Free Kids as a New York State Advocate and a member of our Board of Directors.
Barrie’s passion, persistence and unapologetically hard-hitting style never failed to inspire. Although cystic fibrosis ultimately took her life in 2019, her legacy lives on through the young leaders she inspired and the movement she helped strengthen. We honor that legacy by naming this fund—and our highest youth honor, the Barrie Fiske National Youth Advocate of the Year Award—in her memory.
About the Fund
The Barrie Fund invests in the next generation of tobacco control leaders by:
- Equipping young people with the tools and resources to become powerful advocates for change through leadership development and training.
- Advancing health equity by supporting young leaders from communities most affected by tobacco-related disparities.
- Building a national network where youth leaders can connect, share ideas and amplify their collective impact.
- Recognizing exceptional youth leadership through the annual Barrie Fiske National Youth Advocate of the Year Award.
- Supporting youth-led action through national, state and local tobacco control campaigns across the country.
I truly wouldn’t be the person I am today without the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. I tell other young people to use your voice because it will carry further than you can possibly imagine.
Community Action Grant Opportunity
Through the Barrie Fund, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is continuing to invest resources to support young people from backgrounds and communities that are impacted by the inequities caused by tobacco. A key component is supporting youth initiatives that are changing the way communities address pressing social issues. The initiatives supported by the Barrie Fund often involve collaboration with local organizations, mentorship from experienced professionals and a focus on sustainability to ensure long-term impact.
