Tobacco Control Success Story: Mexico

On February 17, 2022, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico published an amendment to the country’s General Law on Tobacco Control. This historic and comprehensive reform prohibits smoking—including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products—in all indoor public spaces and some outdoor spaces, including bus stations, parks, concerts, sports competitions and other places with high attendance. The updated law also includes a complete ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, making Mexico the ninth country in Latin America to adopt this policy.
