National Tobacco Control Leader to Testify at DC City Council Hearing

Testimony by Matthew Myers to Highlight First Amendment Issues,Effect of Tobacco Ads on Kids

Washington, DC - On Tuesday, November 25, CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS’ Executive Vice President Matthew Myers will testify before the DC City Council Committee on Consumer and Regulatory Affairs regarding tobacco advertising. The City Council is considering passage of bill 12-281, which, if enacted, would ban tobacco advertising near schools and playgrounds. Myers will testify on First Amendment issues related to tobacco advertising, why marketing works, and the effect of tobacco company advertising on children. Myers, a highly-respected attorney with more than 17 years of tobacco control experience, is a nationally recognized advocate on the issue. The CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS is the largest initiative ever undertaken to decrease youth tobacco use in the United States. Its mandate is to focus the nation's attention and action on keeping tobacco marketing from seducing children, and making tobacco less accessible to kids.
