Washington, D.C. – President Maia Sandu of Moldova has signed into law key additions to the country’s lifesaving tobacco control law – a move that will protect millions of Moldovans and safeguard public health.
Under the new law, smoke-free spaces are significantly expanded to include public areas like playgrounds, beaches and sports grounds. The law will now also require visible health warnings at the beginning and end of TV programs featuring tobacco products. It also prohibits the sale of nicotine pouches and flavored heated tobacco products, aligning Moldova with several other countries in the region that have adopted such measures.
In Moldova and around the world, tobacco companies will stop at nothing to addict new customers and undermine the measures we know work to drive down smoking – but impact Big Tobacco’s bottom line. By expanding this crucial public health law, Moldova sends a clear message that it will not stand for tobacco companies luring young people into a lifetime of addiction.
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids applauds the Moldovan government for this important law and stands ready to support swift implementation to ensure a healthier future for all Moldovans.
