ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

Hawai‘i has some of the highest rates of youth nicotine use in the country. According to the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, more than 1 in 3 high schoolers in our state have used an e-cigarette in the last 30 days and the number of frequent users doubled in the last two years. Local teachers and parent organizers have reached out in concern to let us know that keiki as young as 8 and 9 years old have been found with vaping products at school.

Why wouldn’t kids think these sweet, brightly-colored products are for them? With flavors like Unicorn Poop and Mauna Dew are marketed directly to them on social media and easily available at super low prices online or at gas stations, they can stock up on Lychee Freeze disposable vapes for a couple of bucks and share them with friends. And contrary to what Big Tobacco would like keiki and us to think, these products are far from harmless. They addict kids to nicotine, damage their respiratory functions, alter their emotional and mental state, and have sent thousands to the hospital.

To combat this new wave in the youth nicotine addiction crisis, a coalition of more than 200 organizations, community leaders, and advocates are working to protect our kids by prohibiting the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, to prevent the industry from hooking our kids.
