Associate Director, Federal Government Relations

Summary Description

The Associate Director of Federal Government Relations lobbies the House of Representatives on a range of tobacco prevention issues including authorizing, appropriations and tax issues. Knowledge of the federal legislative process as well as tobacco or health policy issues is required. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Vice President for Federal Government Relations.  This job is open to candidates who can permanently work in the United States. 

Primary Duties

  • Lobby Congressional offices on a range of tobacco prevention issues including authorizing, appropriations, tax and trade issues.
  • Analyze legislation and draft policy and advocacy materials such as correspondence to Members of Congress, fact sheets and talking points on a range of tobacco-related issues. 
  • Oversee consultant outreach to select Congressional offices.
  • Grow the number of cosponsors for priority legislation, secure signatures on priority Congressional sign-on letters, and increase Member participation in tobacco-related events and caucus activities.
  • Identify threats and opportunities for TFK engagement.   
  • Participate in meetings with key partner organizations.
  • Maintain daily collaboration with the VP of Federal Government Relations and others on the federal team.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the VP for Federal Government Relations.  

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the federal legislative process.
  • Knowledge of tobacco or health policy issues.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with only general supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling and coordinating multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five (5) years legislative and/or issue advocacy experience.
