New ads portray real costs of tobacco use

The Real Cost, the FDA’s new public education campaign aimed at preventing youth tobacco use, launches nationally today across multiple media platforms including TV, radio, print and online. It will run for at least a year.
Daniel Giuffra, one of our 2013 Youth Advocates of the Year, represented his peers at the Feb. 4 launch event in Washington, D.C. Now a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis, Daniel considers himself “a teenager who wants to help other teens understand the risks of tobacco use.”

First national survey to measure LGBT tobacco use

A new survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just published in the American Journal of Public Health, finds significantly higher rates of tobacco use among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that its landmark national media campaign, Tips from Former Smokers, generated almost 200,000 additional calls to toll-free telephone quitlines and more than 400,000 additional visitors to www.smokefree.gov, the federal website that provides help to smokers trying to quit.

These former smokers are the unlikely stars of the new nationwide media campaign aimed at encouraging smokers to quit and preventing children from starting to smoke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled the ads at a Washington news conference.
