Taking historic action to reduce smoking in the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino has signed a new law that will significantly increase cigarette taxes.
This new law will help reduce tobacco’s deadly toll in the Philippines, where 28 percent of the population smokes – including nearly half of all men – and more than 35,000 Filipinos die each year from tobacco-related disease. We applaud President Aquino and lawmakers who supported the law for taking such strong action to reduce tobacco use.

The Lancet medical journal has just published results of the largest-ever international survey of tobacco use, underscoring both the enormity of the global tobacco epidemic and the urgent need for countries to implement proven strategies that reduce tobacco use and save lives. Without strong action, tobacco is projected to kill one billion people worldwide this century.

New York City Mayor and philanthropist Michael R. Bloomberg has pledged an additional $220 million to the global fight against tobacco use, bringing his total commitment to more than $600 million.
Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at the 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Singapore, where public health leaders from around the world are gathered to intensify their efforts against tobacco use, the world’s number one cause of preventable death.

More than a billion people in 19 countries are now protected by laws requiring large, graphic health warnings that cover at least half of cigarette packs — nearly double the number that were exposed to these warnings in 2008.
The World Health Organization's Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2011, finds that nations are making significant progress in implementing warning labels and other measures to reduce tobacco use. But progress must be accelerated to reverse a tobacco epidemic that will otherwise kill one billion people worldwide this century.

WHO cites four key policies as critical to preventing "impending disaster"

Effective tobacco control policies are among the top 10 "best buys" that governments can implement to combat the growing threat from non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, the World Health Organization says in its first worldwide report on such diseases.
Tobacco use is a risk factor for all of these illnesses — diseases that have now surpassed infectious disease as the leading cause of death worldwide and threaten "impending disaster" in some countries, according to WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan. The WHO released new figures showing that nearly 6 million people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke each year. By 2020, that is expected to increase to 7.5 million — accounting for 10 percent of deaths across the globe.
