Bangladesh has one of the world’s highest rates of tobacco use, with an estimated 58 percent of men and 29 percent of women using some form of tobacco.  Tobacco kills 57,000 of the country’s citizens each year – an average of 156 people each day.

New York City Mayor and philanthropist Michael R. Bloomberg has pledged an additional $220 million to the global fight against tobacco use, bringing his total commitment to more than $600 million.

Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at the 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Singapore, where public health leaders from around the world are gathered to intensify their efforts against tobacco use, the world’s number one cause of preventable death.

Meet Terrie.  She starts her day by putting on a blonde wig and affixing a hands-free device to her tracheotomy hole to help her speak.  Meet Brandon, who sits at the edge of his bed to ease on his artificial limbs. And Roosevelt – he’ll show you the deep scar that runs up and down his torso, the result of heart surgery.

These former smokers are the unlikely stars of the new nationwide media campaign aimed at encouraging smokers to quit and preventing children from starting to smoke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled the ads at a Washington news conference.

California Strikes Gold with Lowest-Ever Smoking Rate

Long commitment to tobacco prevention, smoke-free policies bring dramatic decline

It's not just the sunny climate that gives the Golden State its healthy glow:  The rate of smoking among California adults has just hit a record low, dropping to 11.9 percent.

California now joins Utah as one of two states in the nation to achieve the federal Healthy People 2020 target of reducing the prevalence of adult smoking to 12 percent.  Nationally, the adult smoking rate is 20.6 percent, a level that's remained essentially unchanged since 2004.

Health ministers from around the world are meeting in Moscow this week to discuss the growing global health threat from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer and heart disease.  Russia’s severe tobacco epidemic makes it a case study in NCDs. 

The good news is that the Russian public strongly supports effective solutions:  Eight in ten Russians — including nearly two-thirds of daily smokers — support a national tobacco control policy to help reduce tobacco use.

As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, new research shows that cigarettes not only are a grave health hazard, but a serious threat to the environment as well.

Research funded by Legacy and published in the journal Tobacco Control shows that, “Tobacco is the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the United States, and cigarette filters/butts are the No. 1 littered item found on beaches and in urban environments.”
