After much debate about whether to exempt some major employers from the new smoke-free ordinance, the New Orleans City Council unanimously agreed that all workers will be protected from secondhand smoke and that the implementation date would not be pushed back. The city is officially on target to be 100% smoke-free starting on April 22! Say thanks to the mayor and council members for protecting everyone's right to breathe clean air!
Illinois - Tell Gov. Rauner not to shut down the Quitline!
The Illinois Tobacco Quitline is in danger of shutting down because Governor Rauner has cut off funds. The Quitline received 96,000 calls in 2014 alone from smokers who needed help to quit. It's an important resource for our state that saves lives and saves the state millions of dollars in healthcare costs. Send a letter to Gov. Rauner asking him to restore funding to the Quitline.
Ohio - Tell legislators: Support the governor's proposed $1 cigarette tax increase.
Gov. Kasich has proposed a $1 cigarette tax increase. This would prevent 65,000 kids from smoking and help more than 73,000 Ohioans overcome their addiction to cigarettes. It would also save the state $2.6 billion in long-term health care costs. But right now, the legislature has to approve it. Send them a letter asking them to support this life-saving legislation .
