About the Tax:
- South Carolina's cigarette tax is the lowest in the nation at 7 cents per pack. It has not been changed since 1977.
- The national average for state cigarette tax rates is $1.40
- The highest state cigarette tax rate is Rhode Island at $3.46 per pack. Rhode Island was the first state with a cigarette tax of $3 or more.
- Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have cigarette tax rates of $2 per pack or more.
- Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia have cigarette tax rates of $1 per pack or more.
