From the earliest days of America's pastime, baseball players have used smokeless tobacco and suffered its deadly consequences. Tobacco has harmed the health of icons from Babe Ruth to Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. The toll will grow as long as young people watch their heroes with a wad in their lip and a can in their uniform pocket—and try to be like them.
But we can change that.
This year Major League Baseball and the players union are negotiating a new contract that can finally make baseball tobacco-free. Ten major public health groups are calling on baseball to Knock Tobacco out of the Park!
