The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has been designated as one of five coordinating partners for Michael R. Bloomberg’s Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use in low and middle-income countries, where more than two-thirds of the world’s smokers live. As part of this initiative, the Campaign has established a global advocacy resource center to provide accurate public information about tobacco use and effective tobacco control interventions and to assist advocates with resources and technical assistance to achieve policy change. The Campaign closely collaborates with the Bloomberg partners including the World Health Organization, International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and CDC Foundation.
The International Legal Consortium (ILC) is part of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK). The ILC seeks to promote strong, evidenced-based tobacco control policies embodied in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control by providing legal assistance to lawyers, legal advocates, civil society, and governments worldwide. The ILC provides assistance in: legislative analysis and drafting; support for litigation to advance tobacco control policy and defend against legal challenges to tobacco control measures; international policy support; development of legislation and litigation resource materials; tobacco control policy development and implementation workshops; and development of regional networks of tobacco control lawyers.
The International Legal Consortium Intern will be expected to assist on both substantive and administrative projects. Interns will have the opportunity to explore tobacco control as a public health and policy issue and learn about international advocacy strategies and components in legislation, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution.
