Statement: Canadian Government’s Lawsuit
Alleging Smuggling by RJ Reynolds

Statement by
Matthew L. Myers
President of the
CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS

Washington, DC - The Canadian government’s lawsuit opens a whole new front in the tobacco wars. The potential liability to the tobacco industry extends far beyond Canada’s allegations. There have been allegations of tobacco industry complicity in smuggling in many countries. If Canada succeeds, countries that would never file suit for health-related purposes will not hesitate to do so if evidence emerges that the tobacco industry has encouraged or abetted smuggling.
